Cyberghost Review 2021

Advertiser Disclosure

CyberGhost is a well-known and respected VPN service based in Bucharest, Romania that launched in 2011. CyberGhost may be used on Android and iOS devices as well as computers and several other devices, including gaming consoles.

CyberGhost’s client includes some advanced features like protection against malicious Wi-Fi hotspots and advertising, as well as a tracking filter.

CyberGhost doesn’t offer any free versions of its service but it does offer a 7-day money-back guarantee on all subscription plans, which means that you can try CyberGhost risk-free for a week before deciding whether to become a paying customer or not.

The company offers three different connection plans and several add-on services. These VPN plans range from a monthly plan to a two-year plan that offers significantly better value but does lock you into the service for much longer.

CyberGhost offers a 45-day money-back guarantee on two of its plans, though. This CyberGhost VPN review will go through the features and VPN services offered by CyberGhost and give an objective view of the value of CyberGhost’s security features, privacy, and value.

What is Cyberghost VPN?

CyberGhost is arguably one of the best known and largest providers of VPN services securing and anonymizing the online presence of over 36 million users across the globe. Essentially the service makes you a “ghost” online, keeping you anonymous and ensuring there is no record of your online presence. It boasts over 7400 servers worldwide to ensure connection speeds and allows you to connect up to seven simultaneous devices.

CyberGhost is easy to use and has apps that work on all major operating systems as well as routers, several TVs, and some gaming consoles. In addition to its VPN service, CyberGhost also bundles password managers, private browser, encrypted cloud file storage and Security Suite for Windows, and access to ultra-secure, wholly owned, and operated servers inside Romania for an additional cost.

Why use Cyberghost VPN?

CyberGhost’s Romanian location allows it to avoid the scrutiny of international cyber intelligence organizations such as Five Eyes and Fourteen Eyes. This means additional privacy protections for its users. VPN enables users to connect to the internet anonymously, including hiding your location and helping to protect your privacy and security when you’re online. Using a VPN can help you access specific content in countries that may ban it or stream services from different countries. You can, for example, unblock Netflix. It can also help minimize your digital footprint.

To help you do this, CyberGhost supports three types of specialty servers dedicated to torrenting, gaming, and streaming as well as its regular servers. Altogether, the company boasts over 7400 server locations across 91 countries, increasing its users’ download speed and access.

Can Cyberghost really hide my identity online?

Everyone from service providers to advertisers track your online activity when you use a standard internet connection. However, that can be a problem if you want to maintain your privacy or eliminate your cyber footprint. VPNs can help preserve your privacy and keep you safe online. CyberGhost has strong security and privacy protocols that make it one of the better VPNs. Its Romanian headquarters means even law enforcement can have a challenging time tracking your online activities.

Romanian is not a signatory to international digital agreements, and its own privacy rules are relatively stringent. They also offer dedicated IP addresses for an additional fee in countries including Canada, the U.S., and Germany. These will make it look like you are consistently using the same IP and look less like a VPN. With CyberGhost working, you can feel secure that your online privacy is protected.

Our Rating Process

We assessed CyberGhost based on speed, security, privacy, and server coverage and scored them each out of 5 points to help you in your decision process.

Speed – 4.7 / 5

Although CyberGhost readily admits that your internet connection speed will likely drop slightly when you use its VPN service, this is true of any VPN. CyberGhost’s speed is generally excellent and more than enough to torrent, stream, or game. It does, however, suffer from occasional drops in speed, according to some users.

Security- 4.5 / 5

CyberGhost uses an AES-256-CBC cipher, the standard, impossible to crack encryption method used by all of the strongest VPN providers. However, CyberGhost relies on SHA-256 as a hashing function which is robust but slightly outdated. The company has also not submitted to an external audit in recent years, although it does release a transparency report every three months listing police reports, malware, and copyright complaints. CyberGhost also supports split tunneling, which will essentially allow you to use both an internet connection and a VPN connection at the same time.

Privacy – 4.5 / 5

According to CyberGhost’s rather complicated privacy documentation, it does not store its user’s IP addresses, DNS queries, or browsing history. It also does not log user activity and would theoretically be unable to comply with any requests from legal authorities for this information. CyberGhost also has ad-blocking software that keeps annoying online advertising out of your online experience. However, the company does lose points for its exceedingly long and complicated privacy documentation and the fact that it does gather some data.

Server Coverage – 4.9 / 5

CyberGhost’s server coverage is one of its greatest strengths. The company boasts over 7400 servers in 91 countries, no-spy servers located in its home country of Romania, and dedicated gaming, torrenting, and streaming servers.

Where is CyberGhost VPN located?

How good is CyberGhost VPN?

CyberGhost is a reliable VPN provider with incredible speeds, excellent server coverage and good security and privacy. There is some concern about its parent company’s reputation, but CyberGhost itself has been around since 2011 and is one of the largest and most popular VPN providers.

How can I set up CyberGhost VPN?

There are slight differences in how CyberGhost VPN is set up depending on the device and platform you use. The company has specific instructions in the knowledge base on its website. To start, you’ll need to select and pay for a plan and then download, run and install CyberGhost. Once the app is installed, provide your username and password and choose a profile.
